Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is registered in Australia for type 2 diabetes, weight management and obstructive sleep apnoea, but it is not subsidised on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for any of them. This guide sets out the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) decisions, why the March 2026 recommendation did not become a listing, what the PBAC has said about GLP-1 medicines for obesity, and where Wegovy and Ozempic sit for comparison.
No. As of October 2026, Mounjaro is not PBS-listed for any indication. The PBAC recommended tirzepatide for adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes in March 2026, but Eli Lilly declined to proceed in April 2026, citing price conditions it called "unrealistic and unviable". The PBS records that the listing process has ceased. Mounjaro is available on private prescription, with the patient paying the full price.

Is Mounjaro on the PBS for diabetes or weight loss?
Neither. Mounjaro is not PBS-subsidised for type 2 diabetes, for weight management, or for obstructive sleep apnoea.
The current Australian Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) lists three uses for Mounjaro KwikPen: type 2 diabetes in adults and in children and adolescents aged 10 and over weighing at least 50 kg; weight management in adults with overweight or obesity; and moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity. Being registered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for a use is a separate step from being subsidised for it. A medicine can be approved as safe and effective and still not be on the PBS.
The only tirzepatide use that reached a positive PBAC recommendation was type 2 diabetes, and that recommendation did not become a listing. So, as of October 2026, people prescribed Mounjaro for any reason get it on a private prescription. We do not publish medicine prices; a pharmacist can tell you what a private prescription costs.
What has the PBAC decided about tirzepatide?
Four decisions for type 2 diabetes over almost three years, ending in a recommendation in March 2026. The PBAC advises the Government on which medicines should be subsidised on the PBS, and its decisions are recorded on the PBS medicine status page for each medicine.
| Date | Event | What the record says |
|---|---|---|
| July 2023 | PBAC meeting | Not recommended (type 2 diabetes). |
| November 2024 | PBAC meeting | Not recommended (type 2 diabetes). |
| July 2025 | PBAC meeting | Deferred. |
| 11 March 2026 | PBAC meeting | Recommended "for the treatment of adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus". The 10 mg and 15 mg strengths were found cost-effective; 5 mg would be cost-effective at a reduced price. |
| April 2026 | Sponsor decision | Eli Lilly declined to proceed with the listing. |
| As at 1 October 2026 | PBS record | "The pharmaceutical company has advised that it is not proceeding in the PBS listing process at this time. The process for listing this medicine has ceased." |

Why did Lilly decline the PBS listing?
Lilly said the price and funding conditions attached to the listing were not workable for the company. A PBAC recommendation is not the end of the process: the sponsor and the Government still have to agree terms before a medicine is listed.
As reported by RACGP newsGP on 28 April 2026, Lilly said the Government's price conditions were "unrealistic and unviable", and that the price was "significantly lower than any other reimbursed price globally". It cited funding caps that it said put "disproportionate financial risk" on Lilly, and said the decision affects up to 450,000 Australians with type 2 diabetes. Trade press, including the limbic (29 April 2026) and Pharmacy Daily, also reported funding caps and wholesaler margins among the issues.
"The door to a PBS listing for type 2 diabetes is now shut." Lilly also said that "it is difficult to see how a PBS listing for Mounjaro could be secured for Australians living with obesity".
These are the company's stated reasons. The Government's side of the negotiation is not set out in the sources we checked, so this page does not characterise it. For context on how the process works, our Is Wegovy on the PBS? explainer walks through the steps from PBAC recommendation to listing.
Will Mounjaro be on the PBS for weight loss?
There is no Mounjaro obesity submission in progress, and Lilly says it is pursuing access "outside of the PBS". Separately, the PBAC has given the Government advice on how GLP-1 obesity treatments could be subsidised more broadly. That advice came from its November 2025 meeting, at the Minister's request of 6 March 2025, and was published on 17 March 2026.
The PBAC recommended prioritising people with established cardiovascular disease; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with obesity-related comorbidities; people with syndromic obesity; people with medication-induced obesity; and people needing weight loss to become eligible for surgery.
The advice says broader preventive subsidy "would need to be established as a program outside of the PBS", and calls for better access to diet and physical-activity support.

What does this mean if you are prescribed Mounjaro?
It means a private prescription, with the full price paid by the patient, whatever the reason for prescribing. The PBS status does not change what the TGA has approved Mounjaro for, or the dosing set out in the Australian Product Information.
Two practical points follow from the sources. First, the type 2 diabetes recommendation does not help anyone today: until a medicine is actually listed, a PBAC recommendation has no effect on what a patient pays. Second, PBS status can change. The record for tirzepatide was updated as recently as 30 September 2026, and the PBAC has looked at tirzepatide four times since July 2023, so it is worth checking the PBS medicine status page rather than relying on older articles or social media posts.
If cost or access is a concern, that is a conversation for your prescriber, who can explain the options registered and subsidised for your situation. Other GLP-1 receptor agonists, Ozempic (semaglutide) and Trulicity (dulaglutide), remain PBS-listed for type 2 diabetes. Preptide does not recommend any medicine over another. Our weight-loss medication in Australia overview and GLP-1 medicines in Australia guide set out the registered options neutrally.
Where do Wegovy and Ozempic sit on the PBS?
Ozempic is PBS-listed for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is not PBS-listed, but a revised proposal is due at the November 2026 PBAC meeting. The table compares the four GLP-1-type medicines named in our sources.
| Medicine | Active ingredient | PBS status, October 2026 | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mounjaro | Tirzepatide | Not listed for any indication | PBAC recommended for type 2 diabetes in March 2026; sponsor declined in April 2026; process ceased. |
| Wegovy | Semaglutide | Not listed | PBAC recommended in November 2025 for established cardiovascular disease with obesity, conditional on a price reduction and risk-sharing arrangement; sponsor documentation lodged 27 February 2026 was "Not Accepted". A revised proposal (adults with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and BMI 35 or more, Authority Required) is for the November 2026 meeting; outcome pending. |
| Ozempic | Semaglutide | Listed for type 2 diabetes | Remains PBS-listed for type 2 diabetes. |
| Trulicity | Dulaglutide | Listed for type 2 diabetes | Remains PBS-listed for type 2 diabetes. |

Where does food fit in?
Food is not a substitute for any medicine, and no food changes how a medicine works. The PBAC itself called for better access to diet and physical-activity support alongside medicines.
For people whose appetite has changed, many find smaller, protein-forward meals easier to manage. Our GLP-1 meal plan, portion guide and protein guide are general food information, written to sit alongside the advice of your prescriber or dietitian.
Is Mounjaro on the PBS?
No. As of October 2026, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is not PBS-subsidised for any indication, including type 2 diabetes and weight management. It is available on private prescription, with the patient paying the full price.
Did the PBAC recommend Mounjaro?
Yes, for type 2 diabetes only. At its March 2026 meeting the PBAC recommended tirzepatide for adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus. It had not recommended it in July 2023 or November 2024, and deferred it in July 2025.
Why is Mounjaro not on the PBS?
Eli Lilly declined to proceed with the listing in April 2026. It said the Government's price conditions were unrealistic and unviable, and cited funding caps that it said put disproportionate financial risk on the company. The PBS now records that the listing process has ceased.
Will Mounjaro be on the PBS for weight loss?
No Mounjaro obesity PBS submission is in progress. Lilly said it is difficult to see how a PBS listing for Mounjaro could be secured for Australians living with obesity, and that it is pursuing access outside of the PBS. Future decisions cannot be predicted.
Is Wegovy or Ozempic on the PBS?
Ozempic remains PBS-listed for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is not PBS-listed as of October 2026; a revised proposal for adults with established cardiovascular disease and a BMI of 35 or more is due at the November 2026 PBAC meeting.
What did the PBAC say about GLP-1 medicines for obesity?
In advice published on 17 March 2026, the PBAC recommended a slow and managed rollout prioritising groups such as people with established cardiovascular disease, and said broader preventive subsidy would need a program outside of the PBS.
