Most of what comes up when you search "Mounjaro and alcohol" is written for UK readers. This guide is Australian. It sets out exactly what the Australian Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) for Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy says about alcohol, what it does not say, the early research on semaglutide and drinking, the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) guideline in Australian standard drinks, and some general food planning for a night out.
The Australian Mounjaro and Ozempic CMIs both say: "Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol." Their reason is that alcohol may mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or make it worse, which matters most alongside insulin or a sulfonylurea. The Wegovy CMI has no alcohol section. Australia's NHMRC guideline is no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 on any one day.

- Wegovy. No alcohol section was found in the July 2026 FlexTouch CMI. Source: Wegovy FlexTouch CMI, prepared July 2026.
- No direct interaction or pancreatitis link stated. None of the three CMIs reviewed state that alcohol directly interacts with the medicine, and none link alcohol to pancreatitis risk. Sources: the three CMIs above.

Can you drink alcohol on Mounjaro?
The Australian CMI asks you to tell your doctor if you drink, because alcohol may hide the warning signs of low blood sugar or make low blood sugar worse. Whether, and how much, you drink is a conversation to have with your prescriber.
"Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol. Alcohol may mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or make it worse."
The same CMI explains why low blood sugar is a bigger question for some people than others. Using Mounjaro with a sulfonylurea or insulin "may cause your blood sugar to be too low (hypoglycaemia)", and the doses of those medicines may need to be changed. So the alcohol warning has the most practical weight for people who also take one of those diabetes medicines.
The CMI also advises avoiding dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea by drinking plenty of fluids. That is worth keeping in mind on any day that includes alcohol. For the full list of side effects, see our Mounjaro side effects guide.
One point of confusion: the CMI lists benzyl alcohol as an ingredient of the pen's solution, 5.4 mg per 0.6 mL dose. This is an excipient and has nothing to do with drinking alcohol.
Can you drink alcohol on Ozempic?
The Australian Ozempic CMI gives the same advice as Mounjaro's: tell your doctor if you drink alcohol. Its wording is: "Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol. Alcohol may mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia or make it worse."
The Ozempic CMI (prepared August 2026) also says hypoglycaemia is more likely when Ozempic is used with a sulfonylurea or insulin, and lists acute pancreatitis as a serious side effect. More on Ozempic's side effects is in our Ozempic side effects guide, and food ideas are in what to eat on Ozempic.
What does the Wegovy CMI say about alcohol?
We found no alcohol section in the July 2026 Wegovy FlexTouch CMI. It does carry the same warning about low blood sugar with a sulfonylurea or insulin, and the same listing of acute pancreatitis. The table compares the three Australian documents.
| Australian CMI | Alcohol wording | Low blood sugar with a sulfonylurea or insulin | Pancreatitis listed | Links alcohol to pancreatitis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mounjaro KwikPen (September 2026) | "Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol. Alcohol may mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or make it worse." | Yes | Yes | No |
| Ozempic (August 2026) | "Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol. Alcohol may mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia or make it worse." | Yes | Yes (acute pancreatitis) | No |
| Wegovy FlexTouch (July 2026) | No alcohol section found | Yes | Yes (acute pancreatitis) | No |
Sources: Mounjaro KwikPen CMI (September 2026); Ozempic CMI (August 2026); Wegovy FlexTouch CMI (July 2026). "No" in the last column means none of the CMIs reviewed state such a link; it is not a claim about any individual's risk.
Does alcohol cause pancreatitis on Mounjaro?
None of the Australian CMIs we reviewed link alcohol to pancreatitis risk, so this page does not make that claim. What they do say is that the medicines themselves can cause pancreatitis.
The Mounjaro CMI says "MOUNJARO KwikPen may cause inflammation of the pancreas", describing severe stomach and back pain that does not go away. The Wegovy CMI describes acute pancreatitis as "severe pain in the stomach and back which does not go away", and the Ozempic CMI lists acute pancreatitis as a serious side effect. If you have pain like that, seek medical attention straight away; in an emergency, call 000.
You will see articles that go further than the CMI on this point. We have kept to what the Australian documents say. If you have had pancreatitis before, or are worried about it, raise it with your prescriber.
Who needs to be most careful with alcohol on a GLP-1 medicine?
People who also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, and anyone the NHMRC already advises not to drink. These are the groups the sources single out.
All three CMIs warn that combining the GLP-1 medicine with these makes low blood sugar more likely, and the Mounjaro and Ozempic CMIs say alcohol may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms or make it worse.
The NHMRC says under-18s should not drink alcohol. Mounjaro is registered for type 2 diabetes from age 10 and Wegovy for weight management from age 12.
The NHMRC says not drinking is safest when pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Do Ozempic or Mounjaro reduce the urge to drink?
There is early evidence for semaglutide, the ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, but it is not an approved use and it is not settled. Two studies published in JAMA Psychiatry in 2025 are summarised below. Neither tested tirzepatide (Mounjaro).
| Study | Design | What it found | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hendershot et al., JAMA Psychiatry 2025;82(4):395–405 | Phase 2 randomised trial; 48 adults with alcohol use disorder who were not seeking treatment; low-dose semaglutide (up to 1 mg) for 9 weeks | Reduced grams of alcohol consumed in a lab drinking session, drinks per drinking day and weekly craving | Did not change average drinks per day or the number of drinking days. Small; the authors call for larger trials |
| Lähteenvuo et al., JAMA Psychiatry 2025;82(1):94–98 | Swedish national registry; people aged 16 to 64 with alcohol use disorder, comparing each person's periods on and off treatment | Semaglutide use was associated with a 36% lower risk of hospitalisation for alcohol use disorder (aHR 0.64, 95% CI 0.50–0.83); liraglutide with a smaller reduction | An association only; it needs confirmation in randomised trials |
Sources: Hendershot et al., doi:10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2024.4789 (PMC full text, published online 12 February 2025); Lähteenvuo et al., doi:10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2024.3599. Reduced drinking is not among the uses listed in the Australian Mounjaro or Wegovy CMIs. If you are worried about how much you drink, talk to your GP.
How much alcohol does the Australian guideline allow?
To reduce the risk of harm, the NHMRC says healthy adults should drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day. This is a general population guideline, not a medicine-specific limit.
Australian guidance counts in standard drinks. An Australian standard drink is 10 g of pure alcohol, so advice written for other countries, in their own units, does not translate directly.
| NHMRC guideline (2020) | What it says |
|---|---|
| Healthy adults, per week | No more than 10 standard drinks |
| Healthy adults, any one day | No more than 4 standard drinks |
| One standard drink | 10 g of pure alcohol |
| Under 18 | Should not drink alcohol |
| Pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding | Not drinking is safest |
The guideline is written for healthy adults. If you take a prescription medicine, your prescriber may give you different advice for your situation, and that advice comes first.
How can you plan food for a night out on Mounjaro?
Plan the food before you plan the drinks: a protein-containing meal first, smaller serves, and water in between. This is general food information for a social occasion, not medical advice, and no food changes how a medicine works or makes drinking safe.
Eat a protein-containing meal first. If your appetite is smaller than it used to be, the meal does not need to be large: a palm-sized portion of chicken, fish, eggs, tofu or Greek yoghurt with some vegetables or grains is a realistic plate.
Think in smaller serves. Shared plates and entree-sized dishes are often easier than a full main when fullness arrives early. Our GLP-1 portion guide has plate sizes that suit a changed appetite.
Alternate with water. A glass of water or another non-alcoholic drink between alcoholic drinks slows the pace and helps you keep count. It also fits the Mounjaro CMI's general advice to avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids if you have vomiting or diarrhoea.
Expect nausea and fullness to feel different. Alcohol and GLP-1 medicines can both bring nausea and stomach upset. That is our general reasoning, not CMI wording, but it is a reason to go slowly and stop early if you feel queasy. Gentle options for the next day are in our nausea foods guide.
Plan breakfast the next day. A simple, protein-forward breakfast and fluids are an easy way back to your normal pattern. See our GLP-1 meal plan and protein guide for ideas.
Can you drink alcohol on Mounjaro?
The Australian Mounjaro KwikPen CMI says: tell your doctor if you drink alcohol, because alcohol may mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or make it worse. Whether, and how much, to drink is a conversation with your prescriber.
Can you drink alcohol on Ozempic?
The Australian Ozempic CMI has the same advice: tell your doctor if you drink alcohol, because alcohol may mask the symptoms of hypoglycaemia or make it worse. Hypoglycaemia is more likely if Ozempic is used with a sulfonylurea or insulin.
Does the Wegovy CMI mention alcohol?
We found no alcohol section in the July 2026 Australian Wegovy FlexTouch CMI. It does warn about hypoglycaemia risk when used with a sulfonylurea or insulin, and lists acute pancreatitis as a serious side effect.
Does alcohol cause pancreatitis on Mounjaro or Ozempic?
None of the Australian Mounjaro, Ozempic or Wegovy CMIs we reviewed link alcohol to pancreatitis risk. Each lists pancreatitis as a possible serious side effect of the medicine itself. Severe stomach and back pain that does not go away needs urgent medical attention.
Do Ozempic or Mounjaro reduce the urge to drink?
There is early research on semaglutide only. A small 2025 JAMA Psychiatry trial in 48 adults found reduced drinking in some measures, and a Swedish registry study found an association with fewer hospitalisations for alcohol use disorder. Neither is an approved use, and larger trials are needed.
What is the Australian alcohol guideline?
The NHMRC says healthy adults should drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day to reduce the risk of harm. A standard drink is 10 g of pure alcohol. Under-18s should not drink.
Does the benzyl alcohol in Mounjaro matter for drinking?
No. The Mounjaro KwikPen contains benzyl alcohol as an excipient, 5.4 mg per 0.6 mL dose. It is an ingredient of the pen's solution and is unrelated to drinking alcohol.
