Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injection supplied in Australia in five strengths, from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg, with a step-up schedule that takes 16 weeks to reach 2.4 mg. The July 2026 Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) also includes a 7.2 mg weekly dose for some adults, given as three 2.4 mg injections. This guide explains what the Australian CMI and the ARTG listing say about the strengths, the schedule, the 7.2 mg dose, who Wegovy is registered for, the tablet, and the PBS.

QUICK ANSWER

Wegovy has five weekly dose steps: 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.7 and 2.4 mg. The Australian CMI gives 4 weeks on each of the first four, reaching 2.4 mg from week 17. For weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or more at initiation, the prescriber may go to 7.2 mg weekly (three 2.4 mg injections) after at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg. The prescriber decides every change.

01 · Strengths

What doses does Wegovy come in?

Five strengths: 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.7 and 2.4 mg, each a once-weekly injection. Each strength is a separate pen or syringe. The highest dose in the CMI, 7.2 mg, has no pen of its own and is built from three 2.4 mg injections.

02 · Schedule

What is the Wegovy dose schedule?

The CMI describes four 4-week steps, from 0.25 mg up to 2.4 mg weekly from week 17. Increases happen every 4 weeks over 16 weeks. The slow start is the reason a new prescription begins at a dose far below the 2.4 mg many people have read about.

Weeks on treatmentWeekly dose, if the prescriber follows the CMI scheduleNote
1 to 40.25 mgStarting dose.
5 to 80.5 mgStep.
9 to 121 mgStep.
13 to 161.7 mgStep.
17 onward2.4 mgEnd of the 16-week escalation.
21 onward at the earliest7.2 mg (three 2.4 mg injections), if neededAdults with BMI 30 or more at initiation, for weight management only, after at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg.

The week numbers are the CMI's standard timetable, not a requirement to keep moving up. The 7.2 mg row is "if needed": the CMI does not suggest everyone goes beyond 2.4 mg, and it limits the higher dose to a specific group of adults. Week 21 is simply the earliest point that "at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg" allows.

Only the prescriber adjusts the dose. Each strength is a separate prescription and pen. A dose that feels wrong is a conversation with the prescriber or pharmacist, not something to solve by skipping, splitting or stacking injections. Our Mounjaro vs Wegovy explainer compares the two medicines more broadly.

03 · The 7.2 mg dose

What is Wegovy 7.2 mg, and who is it for?

It is a higher weekly dose that the July 2026 Australian CMI allows for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or more at the start of treatment, if needed. It is given as three 2.4 mg injections rather than one pen.

Who it applies to
"For weight management only: in adults with a BMI ≥30 kg/m² at treatment initiation, if needed." It is not part of the heart-disease or MASH uses.
When it can start
The prescriber may increase to 7.2 mg once weekly after at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg. 7.2 mg is the maximum dose.
How it is given
Three injections of 2.4 mg, given one after another, at least 5 cm apart. There is no single 7.2 mg pen in Australia.
Not for adolescents
Weekly doses above 2.4 mg are not recommended for adolescents, so 2.4 mg is the top of their schedule.

04 · Uses

Who is Wegovy registered for in Australia?

The July 2026 CMI lists three uses. The dose schedule above is the same 16-week escalation; the 7.2 mg option applies only to the first use, in adults.

Weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with weight-related problems, and in adolescents aged 12 and over with obesity who weigh more than 60 kg. Reducing the risk of heart-disease events in adults with a history of heart disease, without diabetes, and with a BMI of 27 or more. MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis) with moderate-to-advanced liver fibrosis but without cirrhosis, under a provisional approval.

Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, but they are separate brands, each with its own CMI; this page covers Wegovy only. For the medicine in general, see our semaglutide food guide and GLP-1 medicines in Australia.

05 · Tablet

Is there a Wegovy tablet in Australia?

Not in Australia. Oral Wegovy, a 25 mg semaglutide tablet, is FDA-approved in the US; Novo Nordisk announced the approval on 22 December 2025.

The healthdirect listing, which draws on ARTG data updated 3 August 2026, shows injectable Wegovy presentations only. Whether Novo Nordisk has applied to the TGA for the tablet is not something we could confirm. See oral GLP-1s in Australia.

06 · PBS

Is Wegovy on the PBS?

No, as of October 2026. The PBAC recommended a listing in November 2025 for established cardiovascular disease with obesity, conditional on a price reduction and a risk-sharing arrangement; the sponsor's documentation lodged on 27 February 2026 was "Not Accepted".

A revised proposal for adults with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and a BMI of 35 or more is due at the November 2026 PBAC meeting. Detail is in Is Wegovy on the PBS?

07 · Comparison

How does Wegovy dosing compare with Mounjaro?

Both start low and step up every 4 weeks, but the doses, devices and top dose differ. This is a comparison of how the Australian CMIs describe the schedules, not a comparison of which medicine suits anyone.

08 · Safety and food

What else should you know when the dose changes?

Other medicines and warning signs matter at every dose. The Wegovy CMI warns that using it with a sulfonylurea or insulin carries a risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), and lists acute pancreatitis as a serious side effect, describing "severe pain in the stomach and back which does not go away". Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take, and seek medical help for symptoms like these.

This page does not summarise the CMI's instructions on missed doses, changing your injection day or storage, because we have not verified that wording for this page. Those instructions are in the CMI that comes with the medicine, and a pharmacist can go through them with you.

On the food side, many people find that smaller, protein-forward meals are easier to manage when appetite changes. That is general food information, not a claim that food changes how Wegovy works. See the 7-day Wegovy food plan, what to eat on semaglutide and the GLP-1 nausea foods guide.

Common questions
What doses does Wegovy come in?

In Australia, Wegovy is supplied as 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.7 and 2.4 mg pens or syringes, each a once-weekly injection. There is no single 7.2 mg pen: the 7.2 mg dose is given as three 2.4 mg injections.

What is the Wegovy dose schedule?

The Australian CMI describes 0.25 mg weekly in weeks 1 to 4, 0.5 mg in weeks 5 to 8, 1 mg in weeks 9 to 12, 1.7 mg in weeks 13 to 16 and 2.4 mg from week 17. Increases happen every 4 weeks over 16 weeks. The prescriber decides each step.

How long do you stay on 0.25 mg of Wegovy?

The CMI schedule has 0.25 mg once weekly for weeks 1 to 4, followed by 0.5 mg for weeks 5 to 8. The prescriber sets the timing of every increase.

What is the Wegovy 7.2 mg dose?

The July 2026 Australian CMI includes a 7.2 mg once-weekly dose for weight management only, in adults with a BMI of 30 or more at treatment initiation, if needed. The prescriber may increase to it after at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg. It is the maximum dose.

How is the 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy given?

As three 2.4 mg injections, given one after another, at least 5 cm apart. There is no single 7.2 mg pen in Australia. Weekly doses above 2.4 mg are not recommended for adolescents.

Is the Wegovy tablet available in Australia?

No. Oral Wegovy (semaglutide 25 mg tablet) is FDA-approved in the US, announced by Novo Nordisk on 22 December 2025, but the Australian ARTG listing for Wegovy shows injectable presentations only.

Can I change my Wegovy dose myself?

No. Every dose change is the prescriber's decision. The Australian CMI sets out the step-up schedule and says the prescriber may increase to 7.2 mg only for adults with a BMI of 30 or more at initiation, after at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg.
